This unique backwater destination situated on the banks of the Vembanad Lake is considered the gateway to the backwaters of Kuttanad. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a favourite haunt of migratory birds from across the world, which makes it a renowned bird watching centre. Kumarakom is also a centre for houseboat cruises.

The Meenachil River was once the main artery of the commercial town of Pala. Meenachil River is believed to be 1000 years old. It is one of the oldest in India and originates from Illikal.
Meenachil river has got its Individuality, a cultural history. It also has a story if religious amity and hard toils of thousands of adventurous Agriculturists.
It is believed that St. Thomas traveled through the then navigable Meenachil river and reached Aruvithura and Cherpunkal. Its also known as Minachil river. Water raises to the banks and overflows during the heavy rains.
